Garbage disposal repair covers the range of things that go wrong with an under-sink unit – a jam from something that shouldn't have gone down there, a motor that hums but won't spin, a unit that's leaking at the sink flange or the discharge pipe, or one that's simply died and won't respond at all. Most disposal problems are mechanical and fixable without a full replacement, but knowing which is which matters before you start taking things apart.
The common signs are pretty clear – the disposal hums but the blades won't turn, it trips the reset button repeatedly, it makes a loud grinding or rattling noise that wasn't there before, water pools underneath the sink near the unit, or it's completely silent when you flip the switch. A humming unit usually means a jam that needs to be cleared. Complete silence often points to a tripped breaker, a dead motor, or a wiring issue that needs a closer look.
We start by checking the obvious things first – the reset button, the breaker, and whether something's physically jamming the blades, which we clear using an Allen wrench in the bottom port rather than reaching into the unit. If it's leaking, we trace the source, since a leak at the sink flange is a different fix than one at the discharge pipe connection to the dishwasher or drain line. If the motor itself has failed and the unit is old, we'll talk through repair versus replacement, since disposals have a limited lifespan and an aging unit with a dead motor is often better replaced than repaired.
Cost depends on what's actually wrong. A jam or reset issue is a quick, low-cost fix. A leaking seal or connection takes a bit more time to access and repair properly. If the motor's gone on an older unit, replacement is usually the more practical option, and we'll give you a straight recommendation on that in Brooklyn, NY rather than pushing a repair that won't last.
